Single-width alloy tower2.2 m to 8.2 mPainting, gutters, fascias and general maintenance. Fits through a standard doorway
Double-width alloy tower3.2 m to 12.2 mTwo people working side by side, longer jobs, more room for tools and materials
GRP (fibreglass) towerOn requestElectrical work and jobs near live services, because the frame does not conduct electricity
Stairway access towerOn requestFrequent trips up and down with tools, where a ladder would be slow or tiring
Podium stepsLow levelQuick indoor jobs: ceilings, lighting, signage

Working height is the platform height plus about 2 metres, which is roughly how high a person can reach. Tell us the height you need to reach and we will size the tower.

Under EN 1004, a standard mobile tower is designed for a platform height of up to 8 metres outdoors and 12 metres indoors. Above that, or on a slope or soft ground, you need fixed scaffolding instead.

scaffold tower hire

Scaffold tower or fixed scaffolding?

A tower is the cheaper choice for short jobs at moderate height on firm, level ground. Fixed scaffolding is the right choice when the work is high, long, heavy or spread along a whole wall.

Our guide to scaffolding hire versus a scaffold tower goes through the choice in more detail.

Do you need training to use a scaffold tower?

You do not need a certificate to work from a tower that has been built correctly. The person who builds, moves or dismantles it must be competent, which in practice means PASMA-trained or following the manufacturer’s instructions step by step. If you would rather not build it yourself, our PASMA-trained team will erect it, move it during the job and take it down.

Three rules prevent most tower accidents:

  • lock the castors and fit the stabilisers before anyone climbs
  • never move the tower with a person or loose materials on it
  • stop work when the wind passes 17 mph, the limit in PASMA guidance

Scaffold Tower Hire FAQs

How much does it cost to hire a scaffold tower in Oxford?

Hiring a scaffold tower from Premier Scaffolding Oxford costs £30 to £70 a week, depending on the tower's height and width. Day rates are available for short jobs. Delivery and collection in our Oxford coverage area are included in the quote.

How quickly can you deliver a scaffold tower?

Most towers are delivered the same day in Oxford, subject to stock and the time you book. Delivery across the rest of Oxfordshire is next day.

What size scaffold tower do I need?

Choose a tower by working height, which is the platform height plus about 2 metres of reach. To work on the gutters of a typical two-storey house you need a working height of around 6 metres. Tell us what you need to reach and we will recommend the size.

Do I need a PASMA card to use a scaffold tower?

No card is needed to work from a correctly built tower. Whoever assembles, moves or dismantles it must be competent, which usually means PASMA training or strict use of the manufacturer's instructions. We can build and dismantle the tower for you.

Is a scaffold tower cheaper than scaffolding?

Usually, for short jobs at moderate height. A tower costs £30 to £70 a week, while fixed scaffolding on one side of a house is typically £400 to £700. Fixed scaffolding becomes better value for long jobs, heavy materials, uneven ground or work above about 8 metres.

Can I use a scaffold tower indoors?

Yes. Single-width towers and podium steps fit through standard doorways and are widely used for ceilings, lighting, stairwells and high walls. A stairwell usually needs a tower with adjustable legs or a specialist stair tower, so mention stairs when you book.

How high can a scaffold tower go?

Standard mobile towers built to EN 1004 are designed for platform heights up to 8 metres outdoors and 12 metres indoors. Our tallest double-width tower gives a working height of 12.2 metres for indoor use. Outdoors, above an 8 metre platform, fixed scaffolding is the safer option.

Do I need a licence to put a scaffold tower on the pavement?

Yes. A tower on a public pavement or road in Oxfordshire needs a County Council licence, which costs £230 for set-up plus 2 days, or £240 on a bus route. A tower on your own drive or garden needs no licence.
