Commercial scaffolding services
- Access scaffolds for construction and refurbishment. Independent tied scaffolds that rise with the build or wrap an existing building for re-roofing, re-cladding or facade repairs.
- New-build housing. Scaffolding lifted in step with the brickwork, plot by plot, so trades are never waiting on access.
- Shops and high streets. Pavement scaffolds with pedestrian protection that keep the entrance open. See shopfront scaffolding.
- Offices, schools and public buildings. Work phased around occupied buildings, term dates and opening hours.
- Industrial units and warehouses. Roof access, edge protection and internal birdcage scaffolds for high-level services and ceilings.
- Loading bays and stair towers. Designed platforms for materials, and stair access where ladders would slow a busy site down.
- Weather protection. Temporary roofs and sheeted scaffolds that keep the programme moving through winter.
- Design. Drawings and calculations for anything outside a standard configuration. See scaffold design and erection.

Compliance on commercial sites
Commercial clients lose time when a scaffolder’s paperwork arrives late. Tell us at quotation stage what your principal contractor needs, such as risk assessments, method statements, design information and inspection records, and we will agree it before we mobilise.
Three rules apply to every commercial scaffold:
- Design. A scaffold must either follow a recognised standard configuration, such as NASC guidance TG20:21 for tube and fitting scaffolds, or have a bespoke design by a competent person.
- Competence. Scaffolds must be erected, altered and dismantled by trained scaffolders. Our scaffolders are CISRS-certified.
- Inspection. Under the Work at Height Regulations 2005 a scaffold must be inspected before first use, at intervals of no more than 7 days, and after anything that could affect its stability. The law puts that duty on whoever controls the scaffold’s use. We offer scaffold inspections as part of the hire.
Which load class does your scaffold need?
The trades using a scaffold decide how strong it has to be. Asking for the wrong duty class is a common cause of expensive alterations halfway through a job.
| Duty class (TG20:21) | Load per platform | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Inspection and very light duty | 0.75 kN/m² | Inspection, access only |
| Light duty | 1.5 kN/m² | Painting, cleaning, light repairs |
| General purpose | 2.0 kN/m² | General building work, roofing, cladding |
| Heavy duty | 3.0 kN/m² | Brickwork, blockwork, heavy materials |
Tell us which trades will be on the scaffold and what they will load onto it, and we will specify the right class.

How commercial scaffolding is priced
Commercial scaffolding is quoted job by job, because no two sites share the same height, access and programme. Your price depends on:
- the length and height of the scaffold, and the number of boarded lifts
- the duty class
- the hire period and the weekly rate after it
- design work for anything outside TG20:21
- pavement or road licences. Oxfordshire County Council charges £180 for the first 7 days, or £220 on a bus route, then £70 or £80 for each further 7 days
- out-of-hours erection, phased handovers and alterations
Send drawings or a short description and we will come back with a fixed, itemised price.
Commercial Scaffolding FAQs
How much does commercial scaffolding cost?
Commercial scaffolding is priced per job, not per metre. The cost depends on the size and height of the scaffold, the duty class, the hire period, any design work and any highway licences. We give a fixed, itemised quotation after a site visit or from your drawings.
What documents should a commercial scaffolding contractor provide?
A commercial scaffolding contractor should provide a written quotation, a risk assessment and method statement, proof of insurance, and either confirmation that the scaffold follows a standard TG20:21 configuration or a bespoke design. Once complete, the scaffold is handed over and must be inspected at least every 7 days. Tell us what your site needs and we confirm it in the quotation.
How often does commercial scaffolding have to be inspected?
A scaffold must be inspected before first use, then at intervals of no more than 7 days, and again after high winds, alterations or anything else that could affect its stability. This is a requirement of the Work at Height Regulations 2005. The inspection must be carried out by a competent person and recorded.
Who is responsible for scaffold inspections on site?
The person or company that controls the use of the scaffold is responsible for making sure it is inspected. On most sites that is the principal contractor or the client who hired it. We offer scaffold inspections as part of the hire.
Do you arrange pavement and road licences?
Yes. In Oxfordshire the scaffolding company applies to the County Council, which asks for at least five working days' notice. A scaffold licence costs £180 for set-up plus 7 days, or £220 on a bus route, and £70 or £80 for each further 7 days.
Can you work around an occupied building or shop that is trading?
Yes. We plan phased erection, protected walkways and clear entrances so the building stays in use. Tell us your opening hours, delivery times and any term dates so the programme works around them.
What is the difference between commercial and industrial scaffolding?
Commercial scaffolding covers shops, offices, schools and construction sites. Industrial scaffolding serves factories, plants and warehouses, where scaffolds are often internal, built around machinery or services, and designed for heavier loads. Both are designed and inspected under the same regulations.
